Hi, my name is Montana and I am a race addict. It all began in 2014, when a friend of mine decided she wanted to do the Color Run 5k. So she signed us up and I started training because I was seriously out of shape (like can’t walk up the stairs without getting out of breath shape). Funnily enough, after that race she decided she hated running and never ran again, while I signed up for as many races as possible. It’s hard to admit that I probably spend the majority of my disposable income on racing (and Pro Compression socks, but who’s counting that?) but at least it’s a healthy addiction, right?
In 2014, I completed 3 5k road races, 1 10k, my first double digit race (the runDisney Tower of Terror 10 miler), 3 5k OCR’s and my first Tough Mudder for a total of 9 races. I became totally hooked on mud runs after that year and decided that would be my focus.
2015 started off with a 10k (and a PR to boot!) and several OCR’s of various distances. It was also the year I ran my first half marathon. By the end of the year, I had logged 13 races, 9 of which were OCR’s. Can you see how this is turning into an addiction?
With the dawning of 2016, I decided to return my focus to road races. So far this year I’ve completed 1 5k (with several more scheduled for summer), 2 10ks (and a new PR!), 2 half marathons (both runDisney- yes I have a problem), and 4 OCR’s. Between the 5k’s I have coming up this summer and the OCR’s I’m already registered for this fall (plus a few that I’m trying to work into the schedule), I will be at around 20 races for 2016- my biggest year yet!
My addiction is also clear to see when you factor in how far I drive to get to a race. The figure isn’t exact, but I remember calculating how far I’d driven for OCR races last year (trips to Pensacola, Atlanta, the East Coast, Miami and several to Orlando) and it came out to something like 3200 miles driven in order to run about 75 miles worth of races! Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way though. I’m super happy with my life right now, and I love the racing lifestyle. I’m already planning out my calendar for 2017…can you say OCD much? Currently I have 2 races I’m definitely registered for- the Gasparilla Ultra Amber Challenge (15k, 5k & 1/2 marathon) in February and the Sarasota Half Marathon in March (I’m FINALLY doing this race after talking about it for years)! I don’t know what else will be on the list for next year, but I know the rest of this year is sure to be a busy and fun one!
