Gasparilla Amber Challenge Training Week 4 & 5: 12/19-12/31

I’m playing a little catch up here…I missed writing my weekly workout post last week. It’s been a crazy few weeks with the holidays in retail…I’m sure those of you who have worked retail before know how challenging these few weeks can be. So I’ll be adding the last two weeks to this week’s Weekly Wrap, hosted by Tricia and Holly!

Monday, December 19: No run. Had our Ugly Sweater party at work- that was interesting!

My people sure take Ugly Sweater party seriously.

Tuesday, December 20: Galloway training with the UTC group. 4 miles tonight with 90/30 intervals.

Wednesday, December 21: Track workout tonight! Did my Magic Mile (per the Galloway training program) in 8:55- it felt great to be back to that speed! Then I did 6×400 repeats. I had some pretty good paces tonight. Gave me a confidence booster for the 5k the next day.

Thursday, December 22: Ran the Jingle 5k race in Lakewood Ranch tonight! PR 29:10- that’s two minutes off my best 5k time! Read my recap here!

Friday, December 23: Much needed ‘active rest’ day; I worked all day so was on my feet regardless, but definitely didn’t run.

Saturday, December 24: Decided not to go run this morning. Went to work all day then came home and opened presents with mom and the boys.

Sunday, December 25: Merry Christmas everyone! Started the day off with a 6 mile run with friends downtown and toasted with mimosas in the parking lot afterward. Then spent the day relaxing with my family.

Monday, December 26: Original plan was to bike this morning, but a friend of mine wanted to get a long run done so we went out for 12 miles this morning. It worked out well because it gave me another ‘back-to-back’ run for Gasparilla training- even though according to my plan I’m not supposed to be at 12 miles yet. I am, however, training for another half in January, so I feel better having gotten 12 miles in.

Tuesday, December 27: No run, but went to see my friends to have dinner and exchange gifts for Christmas with them. It was great to hang out again! It’s been a while since I’ve seen these ladies.

Wednesday, December 28: I was originally supposed to run and swim today, but that didn’t happen. I think my body was telling me I needed a full on rest day- all I did today was eat and nap. It was amazing.

Thursday, December 29: Went to the UTC Fun Run tonight and did 3 miles with my Galloway pace group. Tonight we did 75/30 intervals because most of us were feeling run down from the holidays. It was a good mix.

Friday, December 30: Orangetheory Fitness workout tonight! Sometimes I like to mix things up with different cross training and I’d been meaning to try this out. It’s right down the road from work so it’s super convenient for me. It also gave me a chance to meet with the manager of this location and work out a partnership with her for work, so totally killed two birds with one stone tonight! And a great way to start off my weekend!

Saturday, December 31: Last day of the year! Can you believe it’s 2017 already? I sure can’t. Woke up early and went for an 8 mile run with a small group from my store. Stuck with the 75/30 intervals, which was good because the squats at OTF from the day before sure did a number on my quads and adductor muscles. It was a tough 8 miles, but a beautiful day to be out running! Toasted the New Year later on with some vodka mixed drinks at home with family.

I ended the year on a high note and I’m glad I was able to get back to full time running this month. December I logged 67 miles total and for 2016 I had 543 miles. I was originally hoping to hit 750 miles, but taking some time off this year killed that goal. I’ve just signed up for the “Run the Year 2017” program though, so my team is going to try to complete 2,017 miles by the end of the year. Not each- we split the miles up through the entire team. Right now we have three confirmed members so that’s approximately 672 miles per person. With marathon training next year that’s totally doable! I’m excited to see what 2017 has in store for me!

  1. I love how one of the guys is wearing an ugly sweater vest, without any sleeves under it. Congratulations on a shiny new 5k PR! Two minutes is a lot of time to take off! I’ve never set a mileage goal but came very close to nailing 1200 this year. I was a little bummed I didn’t make it. I think you will easily make your goal with marathon training in 2017.     1. Happy New Year! Thank you! I typically don’t hit mileage goals because I get burned out or overtrained but I’m hoping this will give me the incentive to keep training through the summer months for the marathon.

  2. These few weeks at the end of the year are so hectic and it is hard to stay focused on fitness so kudos to you for the runs and classes that you were able to get in.

    Congrats on the PR and hitting that sub 30 5k!

    1. Thank you! I was pretty surprised by it because I didn’t think I’d be able to do it with my injury!

  3. Wow a 2 minute PR in a 5k is quite a jump! Congratulations!
    You have been busy but still got in some great runs with friends too!
    It was a good year for me too. I haven’t ever made mileage goals but I’m leaning towards it this year. Actually, I’m leaning towards just do a little more in everything. Thinking about that I got in 1.25 miles on New Years Day! I really wanted to start off the new year right!

    1. That’s awesome! I haven’t run much this year so far because of work- I was on a work trip this past week and managed to get a run in but then didn’t have the ability to the rest of the week due to a small gym and no treadmills available when I had time to run! :-/

  4. You were busy! I never set mileage goals. Ever. I’m the kind of person that if I have a number to strive towards…I will sacrifice all common sense to reach that goal, and usually end up in an injured (and angry) state for having done so. I do log all of my miles, though (my OCD has to at least know the numbers LOL). Happy 2017!

    1. I set mileage goals, but usually end up injured or burnt out, take a break and as a result don’t really ever hit those numbers. This year I figured with marathon training happening, why not? I’m not scheduling anything for the last two months of 2017 because I’m not sure how I’ll feel after the marathon so I’ll play it by ear for those months. I hope this will keep me motivated for the first 10 months of the year and especially the summer!

  5. Congrats on your new 5K PR! I used to work retail when I was right out of college. I remember being a zombie the week of Christmas and New Year’s because it was so crazy at work.

    1. It’s a lot better now that I only have one job, but it’s still hard to get things in training wise sometimes. Things come up and I have to adjust my schedule on the fly.
