Gasparilla Amber Challenge Training Week 11: 1/30-2/5

Have you ever just been so excited that the bulk of your training for an upcoming race is done?? That’s how I’m feeling right now about Gasparilla! While I’m super excited for this race- and the entire weekend- I don’t think I’ve ever been as ready for a taper then I am at this moment! Linking up with Holly and Tricia for the Weekly Wrap!

Monday, January 30: Ended up having to try to make up some miles from the weekend today. I usually hate missing long runs- but I had a big weekend at work and was also not feeling too well so I skipped it this weekend. Went out this morning and did 4 in the am and then did the fun run at my store for 3 more in the pm. Total of 7 miles today. It wasn’t a long run, but it was better than nothing!

Tuesday, January 31: Headed over to the other Fit2Run store for their Galloway training. Did 3 miles with my buddy Sherri! I’m glad to have her back after taking some time off after her first marathon earlier this month!

My mileage for January

Wednesday, February 1: This was a rest day. And it felt great.

Thursday, February 2: UTC Fun Run for another 3 miles! Tried running in the new ON shoes that debuted late last year, the CloudFlow. They’re a little stiffer then I like my shoes to be, but I could see myself trying to do some speedwork in them or to race a fast 5k. Definitely not a distance shoe for me.

Friday, February 3: Rest day today. Went up to Clearwater to pick up my packet for the Best Damn Race Safety Harbor and to hang with Krystal that night. We tried to go to bed early since we had an early morning wake up call for running. The good thing is this was our last weekend of back to back long runs before Gasparilla!

Saturday, February 4: Best Damn Race Safety Harbor 10k & 5k challenge! It was a great race and I kept a steady pace throughout the whole thing. Great to practice pacing and how I would feel race weekend. Also awesome to earn some fun medals for a ‘training run.’ 😉 Race recap coming soon!

Sunday, February 5: Once more an early wake up call for our 12 miler! As I said, this was our last back to back long run weekend. The 12 miler went by super fast it felt like! We kept pretty good pacing throughout the entire run! I’m definitely feeling better trained and more ready for Gasparilla than I was for Star Wars Dark Side challenge last year. I think the back to back long runs really helped me prepare for what I will feel like race weekend. One thing I know is I’m so ready for race weekend!! I can’t wait- 20 more days!

So happy to be done with our back to backs!

Going into these next two weeks of tapering, I’m feeling confident, ready and like I really nailed my training this training cycle. Despite taking a brief break in November due to my achilles tendinitis, most of my months from October-February were full of pretty good runs and some awesome long runs. I also feel like the back to back long runs this time around have mentally helped to prepare me for how marathon training will feel- I know it will be different to do 22 miles in one day as opposed to spread out over 24 hours, but now that I’ve done it in the 24 hours I’m more confident that I can handle the training requirements of marathon training. (Does that make sense?) I’m also super excited to earn this badass half marathon medal!!

How badass is this thing??

    1. I’m not sure if that will be harder for me or if marathon training will! We will find out when I start marathon training in May!

    1. Yes you really should check it out! It’s a great race and super popular in this area.

  1. That set of medal from Safety Harbor is very nice! Gasparilla sounds like so much fun. I may have to put in on my list for next year. And, that half marathon pirate medal is to die for! It sounds like you are ready to crush your race. Also, I definitely think back to back long runs will help you with marathon training. Thanks for linking, Montana!

    1. Thanks Holly! I know I definitely feel more mentally ready for marathon training from doing the back to backs. Now I just need to come up with a plan between the end of Gasparilla and the beginning of marathon training to remain consistent and I’m good to go 🙂

  2. I saw those medals you were sporting this past weekend and I also have my eye on the Gasparilla ones! I’m so in for 2018!
I don’t think BDR Nola has the back to back challenge, but I’m going to have to check it out again!
Great week for you, rest up and have fun in Tampa!

    1. Probably not since this is their first year in NOLA but maybe they will open it up next year? I’d love to go do a race in NOLA but all the ones I was looking at this year didn’t work with my schedule.
