Recently I’ve become more involved with the Hogwarts Running Club, a group of Harry Potter enthusiasts who also happen to love running. They put on virtual events that are Harry Potter themed that also have charity partners who benefit from registrants signing up for the events. What I didn’t know when I did my first HRC run back in 2015 is that there were “House Common Rooms” on Facebook where you could join your house and interact with fellow runners. There’s also a House Cup yearly, scored by weekly mileage and other factors throughout the year. The point to all this is so your miles count towards your house. It had been a long time since I’d had a Pottermore account, but since I found out about all of this HRC stuff I wanted to sign up again and get ‘sorted’ so I could join my house on Facebook and run for them. I’d always assumed I was in Slytherin- years ago I’d taken a sorting hat quiz and been sorted into Slytherin, so I assumed I would be sorted into Slytherin again on Pottermore. When the sorting hat came up with its final decision…Hufflepuff. At first, I was confused. What? I’m not ‘nice.’ Hufflepuffs are nice. Those were some of the first thoughts out of my head. Then I joined the Hufflepuff common room and started to interact with some of the Puffs in there- and my original opinion changed. Well, not changed, because they are very nice- but evolved, I’ll say. What originally may have been a marginally disappointed attitude towards my house changed into pride, and here’s why:
1. Hufflepuffs are fiercely loyal friends.
One thing I’ve always prided myself on is my friendships- I’m a very loyal friend. In fact, some have told me that I’m too forgiving. In my opinion, once you’re a friend, you’re always a friend, even if we don’t talk or see each other that much throughout the year. My friends have frequently told me what an awesome friend I am because I’m willing to do anything with them- even if its something I’m not particularly excited about- as long as we are spending time together. Definitely a Hufflepuff trait, now that I come to think of it.
2. We are hard workers.
Puffs aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty- literally and figuratively. We work hard towards our goals and achieve them- even if it takes longer than some of the other houses. Take running for example; I set a goal and work towards it, regardless of how “impossible” it seems to others. I’ve had people tell me before that it would be super hard to run a half marathon and I might not finish- I’ve now finished 8 of them. I’ve had naysayers tell me running is bad for you, or that I wouldn’t be able to finish a Tough Mudder; I’ve done 5 of them. Tell me I can’t do something and watch me prove you wrong!
Hufflepuffs are known for their loyalty. It doesn’t matter if you are having a bad day, or if you don’t always call or text us. Whatever happens, whatever you do, we will be there for you because we’re that kind of a friend. We’re very loyal to our families and other loved ones. Have you ever watched a badger in action? He takes care of his little badger family, no matter what.
4. Speaking of badgers…
I’ve been a badger fan since I was a little girl (it must have been foreshadowing), Wisconsin Badgers that is. But either way, the badger was my very first favorite animal as a kid. And it’s super cool that my house has that as my mascot. They are tenacious little guys.
Now I know I just said I’m ‘not nice’ but that’s not entirely true. The truth is that people annoy me a lot of the time, so I get bitchy about it. But in reality, people annoy everyone. I have been told many times that I have a ‘good heart.’ And at this point in my career, the worst part of my job is having to discipline someone (classic Puff if you ask me). I honestly just want everyone to get along, do their jobs and love what they do (which isn’t always realistic, but whatever). We devote ourselves to whatever it is that we believe in. I devote myself to my running, but I also devote myself to the runners that I run with- I’m always encouraging them to set bigger goals and beat their best times. I’m sincerely proud of my friends when they get a promotion or a raise. I really want them to succeed in life and do well! And when I have a cause that I’m passionate about- nothing gets in the way of me pursuing it and making it my focus.
6. Treat Everyone Equally
One thing that really makes me feel the sorting hat chose right is the fact that Hufflepuff treats everyone equally. They don’t care what color skin you have, your sexual orientation, your gender, when your birthday is, or any of the other little things that people use to judge other people. We love everyone! “I’ll take the lot and teach them just the same,” Helga Hufflepuff said. So yeah, Hufflepuffs are non-judgmental and will be your friend regardless of what you believe in. I like to think that I have that quality a majority of the time. I advocate for the underdog and I’m passionate about standing up for human rights, no matter what those humans look like or who they are/where they come from.
7. Laid back people
Puffs are really chill, laid back people. We don’t walk around trying to one up people- if someone tells me they ran a 20 minute 5k, great for them! I’d love to be able to do that, but it doesn’t make me jealous of you or dislike you. I’m not trying to go out and beat everyone at what they are good at- I celebrate differences and skills/strengths. We don’t make stupid decisions to impress people nor do we brag about our accomplishments. I post about my running on Facebook to hold myself accountable, and yes, I’m proud of my accomplishments, but I don’t think its necessary to throw it in everyone’s faces. I’m just happy to be running and doing something I love! And I’m not about to go do something reckless or dumb just because someone else tells me I should. I think for myself.
Hufflepuffs have been associated with food- heck our common room is close to the kitchens- and I own this quality. I love food. And I’m damn proud of it! It doesn’t insult me that we are known as the “cookie” house. I love being known as the cookie house! I love cookies! And I’ll eat cookies any time I please! Along with a bunch of other delicious food choices. 😉
9. We have the coolest ghost.
Let’s be real here, Hufflepuff has the coolest ghost, the Fat Friar. I mean, just look at him! He’s always ready to party, he gives people (and poltergeists) multiple chances, and he’s always there to support and help the students, even if they aren’t of his own house! You’ve got the Bloody Baron of Slytherin who’s kind of scary, the Grey Lady of Ravenclaw who’s a bit dramatic, and Nearly Headless Nick who can be a bit whiny and obsessed with his past. The Fat Friar is just out to have a good time!
10. Hufflepuff gets along with all the houses.
Let’s examine this for a minute: not only is Hufflepuff the house with the least Dark Wizards to come out of it, we are also the house that doesn’t really have a quarrel with any other house. You’ve got the Gryffindors and Slytherins who practically hate each others guts. The Ravenclaws and Slytherins are pretty competitive with each other, and don’t really trust anyone else very easily. And in the books, the Ravenclaws were a bit standoffish and didn’t really interact that much with the other houses, except Luna Lovegood. But the Hufflepuffs were friendly towards everyone (except briefly during the Triwizard Tournament when several of them were mad at Harry for taking Cedric’s glory, but we can forgive them for that).
So yes, I’m proud to be a Hufflepuff. It wasn’t what I expected, but it’s exactly where I belong. And so far, I’m loving all my interactions with the amazing Puffs in my House!
